Jatropha for Biodiesel Plant

Mission Biotechnologies Sdn Bhd (MBT) being one of the earliest bio-diesel producer is no stranger to the bio-diesel industry in Malaysia. The Bio-diesel plants of phase 1 & 2 having an annual production capacity of 350,000 tonnes are located within the industrial area of Kuantan Port. The phase 1 plant was commissioned back in August 2008. The plant started producing Palm Methyl Esther (PME), which is the scientific name for bio-diesel from palm oil and its by-products include glycerine and purifies fatty acid distillate (PFAD).

Since the beginning the company has been focusing on a non-food drought-resistant crop called jatropha which is being cultivated in India as a replacement for palm oil. This is due to the price volatility of palm oil coupled with resistance from environmental groups who claim bio-diesel plants are taking away a food source from the poor to feed the energy needs of the rich. The plan was realized by the company recently and it brought in six 20-ft containers through Kuantan Port as a trial shipment.

Mr. Venthan, the General Manager along with Mr. Prem Chandran of the company were excited about this new step in a different direction and approached Kuantan Port to film the shipment arriving in Kuantan Port which is hoped to carve the way for many more shipments in the future. The video shooting with the collaboration of Kuantan Port Consortium Sdn Bhd (KPC) started from the time the carrying vessel arrived at the port’s anchorage on 12th May 2010 until the container were received safely at the plant which took about two days.

Kuantan Port wishes to congratulate MBT for the successful shipment of the jatropha and KPC is glad that the company is exploring alternatives to increase the volume of bio-diesel in Kuantan Port in the future.
